Volkswagen Polo Test Drive: When small is big

Polo is following Beetle in its footsteps. With a new engine, Polo now offers more power and better mileage. Beetle has always been synonymous with Volkswagen; the popular car that took birth during the time of Hitler. It was Beetle that proved that a car can run at the cost of a two-wheeler. With a new engine, Polo has become the true successor of the Beetle lineage with bullet-proof reliability and least maintenance.

Real German

First and foremost, Polo is real German. Because, it was on the orders of Adolf Hitler that Ferdinand Porsche began the Volkswagen tradition. Though cars like Mercedes to BMW have come out of the Volkswagen stable, the one that we can own without burning a hole in one's pocket is Volkswagen Polo.

World car

Polo is bigger than Beetle and is modern. Though a new Beetle was launched recently, Polo continues to be the most popular Volkswagen. Modelled on Audi 50, it is the Typ 6R fifth generation Polo that is sold in India now.

100 cc engine

The old 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine has been replaced with an all-new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder unit. The smaller engine offers better fuel efficiency; with an increase of 2 km, the mileage now goes up to 18.78 per litre. Power too has seen a spike, but by a meagre 1 bhp, from 75 bhp to 76 bhp. The new engine is low on torque, it produces only 95 Nm compared to the 1.2’s 110 Nm. With the overall improvement after the introduction of the new engine, the 1.2 litre model won't be available now. However, as the performance car, the turbo petrol GT TSI will continue.

Premium quality. The interior is in black and dull beige. Chromium lining on the AC knob and gear knob. Steering and gear knob in leather finish give it an elegant look. The steering wheel has a flat bottom design that is inspired from other Volkswagen siblings. The gauges and meters offer superior readability.

Features

The stereo gets a touch screen. The audio system can be controlled from the steering. AC is automatic. Other features include USB, auxiliary ports and a memory card slot, comfortable seats, enough leg room, a decent boot and storages.

Driving

The main change is the smoothness in the drive offered by the super refined petrol mill. The additional one bhp power may not be felt in normal circumstances. Overtaking is easy. The five-speed gearbox is accurate, while the steering is on the lighter side, which helps in city drives and in parking. Polo is stable even on high speeds. Though it is a small car, there is no reduction in travel comfort. Suspension tackles all the hurdles on the roads effortlessly. The vehicle also masks its speed considerably.
