Tata's premium SUV Harrier was the toast of the New Delhi Auto Expo held earlier this year. It was described as the best vehicle Tata has ever built even before it was launched. Here are more details about the car that has great looks and premium features.

Jaguar lineage

The car has been built on Omega platform that was developed from Jaguar Land Rover's D8 architecture. Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sports and Jaguar E-Pace all are underpinned by the D8 platform. Tata says that it has optimised the platform further for Harrier to tackle all types of roads. Harrier is set to redefine SUVs on Indian roads.

Harrier's design is based on Tata's Impact 2.0 design philosophy. Harrier is equipped with floating roof finish, big wheel arches, protective side cladding, dual-tone front bumper with satin silver chin guard, xenon HID project headlamp, dual function LED daytime running lamps with turn indicators, 3D LED taillamp with sporty piano black finish, ORVM with logo projection and 235/65 R 17 inch five-spoke alloy wheels.

The interiors

In the inside, Harrier features an oak-themed interior with leather finish on door pads and seats. The console has a seven-inch TFT colour display. The floating island 8.8-inch touch screen infotainment system has four speakers, four tweeters and a sub-woofer.

The engine

Harrier is powered by a two-litre, four-cylinder Kryotec diesel engine. Tata Motors believe the new engine can provide good driveability and performance. Tata says that the engine is inspired from cryogenic rocket engine for its power and reliability. Tata claims that the engine has been benchmarked against global standards of performance and refinement. The 1956cc engine churns out 140 bhp of power at 3750 rpm and 350 Nm of torque between 1750 and 2500 rpm. It is mated to a six-speed manual transmission gearbox.

Harrier is 4598 mm long, 1894 mm wide and 1706 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2741 mm and 205 mm of ground clearance. The fuel tank has a capacity of 50 litres. In terms of safety, Tata Harrier comes with six airbags - driver, co-driver, seat side and curtain. The safety features include 14-point advanced electronic stability programme that includes ABS, electronic brake force distribution system, corner stability control, offroad ABS, electronic traction control, electronic stability control, hill-hold control, hill descend control, brake disc wiping and hydraulic brake assist.

Harrier's front suspension has been carried forward from Land Rover while the rear torsion-beam or twist-blade suspension set-up has been designed by Lotus engineering. Tata Harrier also gets three driving modes - City, Eco and Sport. Moreover, the ESP system has selectable modes for different conditions – normal, wet and rough. The driver seat is eight-way adjustable while the co-driver seat is four-way adjustable. The backseat is 60:40 foldable. The boot has a capacity of 425 litres which goes up to 810 litres if the backseat is folded. Harrier will be launched early next year.
