Relatively a new entrant into the world of SUVs from Mercedes-Benz, the GLC cannot claim the legacy of most of the top-quality models rolled out by the German luxury car-maker over the years.

The GLC-class went on sale last year after being introduced just about two years ago. The compact luxury crossover was brought in to replace the GLK SUV which rivaled the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

C-Class SUV

The GLC is the SUV equivalent to the C-Class. The letter ‘G’ stands for Geländewagen (German for off-road vehicle). This is followed by the letter ‘L’ that acts as a linkage with the letter ‘C’ - the GLC being the SUV equivalent to the C-Class.

Off-roading capabilities

The GLC’s design philosophy echoes that of the Mercedes C-class. Though the vehicle is based on the C-Class platform, the new GLC is longer in the wheelbase by 33mm. It appears to be a stronger and stylish luxury SUV, but the influence of the C-class is clearly seen in the three-dimensional radiator grille.

Elegant profile

The sportier-looking bumper and flowing lines on the front portion give the vehicle its unique character. The grille flanking the illuminated Three-Pointed Star logo has brushed aluminium garnish with chrome inserts. The adaptive LED headlight is equipped with cornering light assist. It is energy-efficient, but is superior to its rivals in the segment when it comes to performance. The GLC wears an all-powerful look, thanks to the elegantly flowing, muscular body-lines.

Sporty and charming

The running board made of aluminium adds to the overall sportiness of the vehicle. The dual-tone 18-inch five spoke alloys, and the chrome skid plate with dual exhaust pipes lend the car a confident sense of solidity and are pleasing to the eye as well. The full LED tail-lights have adaptive illumination capabilities.

Classy interiors

The interior and cabin layout of the GLC are well-made. The two interior color schemes - black/beige and all black – bode will with the Mercedes C-class. Aluminum and hand-finished wood options, chrome trim on the vents, metal finish on the high-quality switches and knobs, and the double-stitched leather seats have a premium feel about them. Convenient shift paddles on the multi-function steering wheel are electrically adjustable for direct manual control.

Nice, firm seats

The front seats are bigger and better-shaped. There is ample leg space and knee room. Head room too is quite good. The air-conditioning vents will definitely make the ride more enjoyable for the rear-seat occupants. The leg support leaves a little to be desired. There is optional full-length sunroof in place. The 550-liter boot is very useful.

Smooth ride

The 220 d 4MATIC GLC comes with a 2,143 cc, inline 4-cylinder engine churning out 168 BHP at 3,300-4,200 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 1.400 rpm. There are five distinctive modes - Economy, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ - to choose from. The Eco mode stresses fuel-efficient driving practices, while the Comfort mode offers decent power delivery and comfortability. Both the Sport and the Sport+ modes, in which the engine becomes more responsive, are tailor-made for aggressive driving. The off-road package offers five terrain settings: Slippery, Off-road, Incline, and Trailer.

What to expect

The GLC is noticeably larger and more spacious. Loaded with safety features, it is comfortable to drive. Off-roading capabilities, fuel efficiency and a host of luxury features make it an ideal choice for customers willing to spend around Rs 52 lakh on a car.
