Stuck in Saudi airport? These new compensation rules would come in handy

Riyad: The aviation ministry in Saudi Arabia has tightened norms for air carriers operating in the nation with the new norms to come into effect from August 11.

The head of the Civil Aviation General Authority and Transport minister Sulaiman Al Hamdan has approved the proposals which include suggestions that travellers should be compensated for delays and loss of luggage.

In addition to the fines that have to be paid to customers, carriers would also have to pay fines to the tune of SAR10,000 to SAR25,000 as general fine.

Key points in the new law

  1. If the flight is delayed for more than six hours

  • All passengers must be accommodated by the carrier until the next flight is ready

  • A compensation of SAR370 for each passenger

  1. After first hour delay

  • Passengers must be provided drinks after the first hour of delay

  1. After three hours of delay

  • Food has to be served.

  1. Loss of luggage

  • Domestic travellers would be compensated with SAR1700

  • International travellers would be compensated with SAR2800

  • A maximum of SAR5900 would be offered as compensation under this

  1. Cancellation of services

  • Pre-planned services- customers should be notified 21 days in advance

  • Services to the differently-abled - Two times of the ticket cost would have to be paid as fine
