We all know that old Aesop fable around the tortoise and the Rabbit and how the overconfident rabbit ended up losing in the running race! But there is a twist in the tale!

The tortoise who apparently refused to participate in the race was cajoled by letting him stand 100 meters ahead of the rabbit. The rabbit’s speed was ten times more than that of the tortoise. When the race started there was already a 100-meter distance between them. By the time the rabbit started the race, the tortoise was already 100 meters ahead and when the rabbit reached 100 meters, the tortoise had already passed 10 meters more.

So the tortoise was always 10 meters more than the rabbit. When the rabbit crossed 10 meters, the tortoise had crossed a meter more. When the rabbit crossed 1 meter, the tortoise had crossed 10 cm and that made the latter always in front prompting the rabbit to accept his defeat.

This thesis was found by Italian Mathematician Seno who lived in the 5th century BC. Seno has also figured out a lot of such intricate Mathematical theories before. Bertrand Russel called Seno’s thoughts “immeasurably subtle and profound.”

Some of the other Mathematical geniuses who wowed us with their creative beauty include Archimedes, Pythagoras, Euclid, Newton, Fermat, Lebnis, Carl Friedrich Gauss, Ramanujan and Paul Erdos (Hungarian Mathematician). Their theories and thoughts played a key role in the development of science and technology which also helped in the growth of mankind.

According to Stephan Benash, Mathematics is one of the greatest and strongest arsenals of the human mind. The queen of science. Scientists research material to figure out pure and applied sciences. Mathematics has played a key role in various forms of development for mankind and that includes Weather forecast, finding the placement of the planets, study of medicine and diseases, Engineering, functional intelligence, farming, planning, budgeting, financial management, manufacturing, computer science, and business.

Love for Maths

For those who are interested in making a career in Mathematics, the possibilities offered in India is immense. After picking science subjects for Plus Two (Maths is mandatory) IISc Bangalore or enrol into various integrated Maths courses like BS/BS-MS at any of the IITs all over the country. You need good scores in ।IT -JEE / KVPY.

You can also get admission at Thiruvananthapuram along with 7 other centres based on the IISER Board exam scores and IISER Aptitude tests. For those trying for higher studies in Mathematics after plus two Kolkata’s Indian Statistical Institute and Chennai Institute of Mathematical Sciences are two great options.

B Stat and B Math in Statistics and BA courses in Mathematics are the ones available at ISI. CMI offers two graduate courses like B.SC Honors in Maths + Computer Science; B Sc Hon in Maths +Physics. For both of these courses, the accent will be on Maths. At IIT Delhi, Guwahati, IIT Ropar, Delhi Technological University the Btech Mathematics and Computer courses with an emphasis on Maths and Computer Science are attracting students. There are integrated MSc courses available for those who finished their Plus two at the University of Pondicherry, University of Hyderabad, and Cochin University.

Even after completing graduation taking Maths as the main subject, there are MSc, Integrated MSc - PhD courses at ।IT, IISc, TIFR, IISER, NISER, ISI and CMI. Most institutes also allow entry for Btech students. Besides Mathematics there are options to do higher studies in Statistics, Operation Research, Computer Science, Data Science, Econometrics, Financial Engineering, Actuarial science, Bio Statistic and BioInformatics.

Chennai Mathematical Institute’s MSc Data Science, the combined Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics conducted by ISI, IIT Kharagpur, IIM Kolkata, IIT, Madras’s Industrial M Mathematics and Scientific Computing, various MA Course at Madras School of Economics, the MSc Population Science course at International Institute of Population Studies, Mumbai is suitable for Maths graduates.

If you have studied Maths as a graduation subject, you can join any of these courses in these universities - Pune Universities MSc Industrial Mathematics, Delhi University’s MSc Operations Research, IGI DR Mumbai’s MSc Economics, the MSc Mathematics Education course jointly conducted by Delhi University and Jamia Milia Islamia, IIT Guwahati’s MSc Maths and Computing.

Those Mathematics students who are preparing for higher studies should definitely take the following exams.

• National Board of Higher Mathematics Scholarship test

• JAM Maths/ Statistics

• GATE Mathematics/Statistics

After MSC/Btech studies there are various opportunities in India for research studies.
