Erode: Archaeologists have unearthed 2,300-year-old burial cists and other artefacts at Kodumanal village near the Noyyal river at Chennimalai near here in Tamil Nadu.
The ancient artefacts were found by a team of archaeologists from Bengaluru, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu.
They have also unearthed different types of pots, plates, pearls, beads, stone weapons, and remains of some ancient machinery. The researchers said some craft units had functioned in these areas in the ancient era.
These ancient objects have inscriptions in different scripts.
According to researchers, Chennimalai was part of a trade centre even during the ancient period and merchants from various lands reached here for buying cloth materials. This explains scripts of various languages found inscribed on the objects.
Chennimalai is still known for weaving towels and bedsheets that are sold to various parts of the country.
