Chengannur: A 65-year-old lawyer was allegedly murdered here following a spat over disposing of garbage.
Thykkoottathil Abraham Varghese succumbed to head injuries at the Chengannur Taluk Hospital after he was allegedly attacked by three young men with a helmet.
The police, after a preliminary investigation, suspect it to be a case of murder. Police sources said they have got evidence from the CCTV cameras in the vicinity of the crime spot.
The police have taken two youths into custody.
According to the police, the victim was attacked on Friday night when he was returning to home at Angadikkal in Chenganoor after dumping waste at a vacant plot near Puthenkavu.
A youth who was residing near the vacant plot called up two of his friends and apparently planned to confront Varghese for dumping waste at the plot. They chased Varghese and blocked his vehicle near a curve near his house. The youths removed Varghese's helmet and hit on his head with it. The lawyer fell unconscious on the ground.
As he did not return even after a long time his family members called him on his mobile phone. One of the youth picked up the phone and replied that he was admitted to the Chengannur Taluk Hospital after falling in front of a vehicle.
The police said though the youth took Varghese to a nearby private nursing home in their scooter, he was not admitted there. They later took him to the Taluk Hospital. The youth had told the staff at the hospital that Varghese was injured in an accident.
