Najeeb, a native of Palluruthy, is the face of Kochi in the fight against COVID.
Most patients in west Cochin are being discharged from hospitals and COVID treatment centres under the care of Najeeb, an autodriver who took to the streets during this pandemic without any fear.
Najeeb has been transporting those who have recovered from COVID centres to their homes for 23 days now without much rest. He helps those who can't afford to travel back home after their COVID treatment is over.
He offers the free service by taking all safety precautions, including wearing a PPE kit. The auto driver with a PPE kit is now well known to the people of west Kochi.
He drives his vehicle from Palluruthy to COVID treatment centres in Aluva and even in Nedumbassery to help those in need. Najeeb disinfects the auto after every trip.
Najeeb took up the job voluntarily when the health department found it difficult to provide vehicles to take home those who had recovered amid the increasing number of COVID patients.
Najeeb has to spend about Rs 1,000 daily on diesel and PPE kit. He takes the amount from whatever he saves from his meagre income. Najeeb is not ready to accept financial help from anyone.
People like Najeeb, who offer their service selflessly during the pandemic by disregarding their own safety, are also true COVID warriors.
