Nedumbassery: The cops are all set to take strict action over the shocking incident of a dog being tied to a moving car and dragged along the road in Ernakulam.
After the video of the incident was widely circulated on social media, the Chengamanad police registered a suo motu case against accused Yousuf.
Yousuf, 62, of Chalakka was arrested from his house on the same day the incident was reported. The Motor Vehicles Department has also filed a case for tying the animal to a passenger vehicle.
Rural district police chief K Karthik said that a detailed probe has been ordered into the incident with Chengamanad inspector T K Josey leading the investigation.
The police have shot off a missive to the RTO, seeking to cancel the car permit and driver’s licence. The police will hand over the car from the Motor Vehicles Department to the RDO.
Yousuf was later let off on bail. Stones were hurled at his house on Saturday afternoon, causing damage to the front window. A gang of people who arrived in the car hurled the stones, the family said in their complaint to the police.
‘Abaca’ gets a shelter
The dog, that was dragged along the road, has been named as 'Abaca'.
The dog is currently at the house of T J Krishnan, who is the vice-president of Daya Animal Welfare Organisation.
The dog, which was found injured at the paddy fields along the Manjali-Eroor route, was taken to the Paravoor veterinary hospital on Friday itself and given preliminary treatment by Dr Chandrakanth and his team.
The dog, around 6 years old, has a slight limp. As it was dragged along the road, the dog suffered several bruises. But is recovering well.
Twelve dogs found abandoned on the streets have been given shelter at Krishnan's house at Paravoor. A tuition teacher, Krishnan uses a share of his earnings to feed the dogs.
