Mother of three killed as car ploughs into people at bus stop at Vimala City

Adimali: A woman was killed after a car ploughed into a few people who were waiting for bus at Vellathooval, Vimala City, here in Idukki district on Sunday morning. The deceased has been identified as Shaila (51), wife of late Joy of Kunnakadu House at Viripara near Mankulam.

Two others who sustained serious injuries in the accident are autorickshaw driver Jomet George (31) of Kaka City and Geetha (61), wife of Jacob John of Ayiram Acre.

Jisha Sanu, a pedestrian, suffered minor injuries.

The car driver, identified as Sivakumar (45) of Marthandam in Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari district, was taken into custody by the Vellathuval Police. Initial reports suggested that he might have fallen asleep while driving. Three others were in the car. None of them sustained injuries.

The accident occurred at around 11 am as Sivakumar apparently lost control of the car and it hit an autorickshaw first before hitting those standing at the nearby bus stop. The car came to a halt after it hit the wall of a milk-collection centre.

Succumbs en route to MCH

Shaila was rushed to the Adimali hospital along with Jomet and Geetha. However, Shaila succumbed to her injuries while she was being transferred to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital.

Shaila was returning home after the Sunday mass at Bathel Marthoma Church when the tragedy struck. She is survived by three sons: Jinu, Jojo and Jibin.

Jomet has been admitted to Kottayam Medical College hospital for further treatment. Geetha who fractured her legs in the accident has been admitted to a private hospital in Ernakulam.

Tamil Nadu natives in car

Vellathuval SI M V Thomas said that all the persons in the car were working for the past one week under a contractor who took up electrification work at Admali. They were returning to their native places in Tamil Nadu through the Bodimettu route from Adimali.

The car was heading towards the Rajakkad side when the accident occcurred.
