Thodupuzha: A woman has been sentenced to life and rigorous imprisonment, and fined Rs 15,000 for suffocating her one-and-a-half-year-old son to death.
Fourth Additional Sessions Judge PV Aneesh Kumar convicted Roli Mol (39), wife of Jolly Chariyil house, Kuntham, at Ayarkkunnam in Kottayam.
The incident took place on April 18, 2018, at a line house at the Peermade Tea Estate where the woman and her family had come to stay in connection with the construction of a relative's house. The woman has another son, who is disabled.
The prosecution alleged that she planned to kill herself and the eldest son after ending the life of the youngest child. The child fell down from the bed in its struggle as it was being suffocated. The frightened woman then called her neighbours.
The boy was rushed to a private hospital in Kattappana, but he could not be saved. The doctor on duty grew suspicious about the death after seeing fingerprints on the boy's neck and informed the police about it.
Shibu Kumar, who was the inspector of Upputhara, conducted the investigation and arrested the accused.
The woman had tried to jump into a well and commit suicide. The court did not accept the defence’s argument that Roli had mental problems.
The court also ordered that the care of the eldest child be taken over by the District Child Welfare Committee.
