Kannur: The BJP staged a dharna against the CPM leadership at the police station in Kannapuram, raising slogans and making calls for killing the Left party’s representatives.
The BJP protesters took the name of CPM representative and panchayat member P P Shajir while raising the slogans.
“You’ll not return after seeing your wife. You’ll not return after seeing your mother. No one will come to protect you. You’ll not see your family members. We’ll cut you and throw you in the forest,” the protesters said right in front of the police station.
Tension has been brewing between the CPM and the BJP for some days now in Kannapuram and its nearby areas. The BJP was protesting against the police alleging they were not looking into the matter impartially.
If the CPM did not control its activists, its leaders would be attacked in their homes, the BJP protesters said.
The BJP's sloganeering comes on the same day that four activists of the Democratic Youth federation of India, the youth wing of the CPM, were arrested for raising provocative slogans in Malappuram.
BJP district president N Haridas, who reached the spot later, inaugurated the dharna.
The police stopped an attempt by the BJP to put up a pandal near the police station to go on a strike. This agitated the BJP activists who got into an altercation with the police. The police arrested four activists and moved them to a quarantine centre.
The BJP’s district leadership said the party’s activists had to resort to provocative sloganeering when the police tried to intervene in the protests.
BJP district general secretary K K Vinod Kumar said that party activists were being rounded up and attacked by the CPM at many places in and around Kannapuram. However, the police were not doing anything to stop such attacks, he alleged.
