Two held over attack on Naseer, rural Kozhikode still tense

Kozhikode: Two men were taken into custody over the murder attempt on 'COT' Naseer, CPM rebel candidate from the Vadakara Lok Sabha seat. The men from Kolassery and Kathirur were nabbed on the basis of the CCTV footages, said the police.

The arrested have been identified as Sojith and Ashwanth. Both are CPM activists.

Police had earlier filed cases against three CPM workers.

Meanwhile, several rural areas of the Kozhikode district are still tense after sporadic incidents of violence were reported hours after the declaration of Lok Sabha election results on Thursday. Vadakara, Chombala, Edachery, Nadapuram, Valayam, Kuttiady, Perambra and Koyilandy station limits are on the edge after workers of rival political parties took on each other on street and pelted country-made bombs at houses of political opponents.

The prohibitory order will be in place within the limits of eight police stations till 10am on May 27, said Kozhikode rural district police chief U Abdul Kareem.

Police also recovered bombs and weapons from this area, added the officer.

Prohibitory order is in force here, as per the direction of district collector S Sambasiva Rao, sensing trouble in the wake of the announcement of poll results.

Bombs were thrown at the houses of CPM and RMPI workers in Vadakara.

The house of a CPM branch committee member MP Sanoop was damaged in bombing. CPM alleged that RMPI was behind the attack.

Bombs were also thrown at the house of RMPI Onchiyam area committee member VP Prakash.

On Friday, another CPM local leader Sameer Thayyil Peedika was attacked, allegedly by RSS workers. He was attacked at the branch office of the party in Pakkayil.

In Keezhal, RSS worker Sulesh TP was stabbed yesterday. He was admitted at the Government Medical College Hospital.

On Friday, police recovered country-made bombs from the premises of a house in Valayam. Bomb squad who reached the spot inspected the area.

Valayam police have registered a case and are investigating.
