Chakkittapara: A newly-born elephant calf, that fell into a reservoir, was rescued by the workers at the Perambra Estate in Kerala's Kozhikode district.

Tapping workers first spotted the baby elephant around early morning last week. The baby jumbo is suspected to have tumbled into the reservoir soon after birth. When the workers found the calf, it was stuck in the slushy area of the reservoir. Workers then got down and moved the calf to safety. Workers and plantation authorities handed over the elephant calf to the Peruvannamuzhi forest officers.

Back on land, the elephant calf was given water and glucose.

The forest range officer said that the services of a veterinary surgeon have been sought and the elephant calf would be kept under observation for two days. A herd of elephant was in the area on Monday night. Authorities hoped that the mother elephant would come in search of the calf. The forest department officers are camping in the area.

Estate supervisor Satheesh Babu, workers Shibu Muthukad, C P Shaji, C R Sheena, T C Binu, E P Lineesh, Vincent Thomas and M M Riju rescued the calf.
