Malappuram, Tirurangadi: In an act of altruism, a group of ambulance drivers took the initiative to transport the body of a migrant worker by road to Varanasi in UP.
The body of Sikhandar, 20, who died in a bike accident on September 25, was taken to his hometown by ambulance drivers at Chemmad in Malappuram district after the relatives of the deceased expressed their inability to travel to Kerala.
As Sikhander lacked any identity proof, the efforts of the private company, where he was employed, to transport the body by air went down the drain. Later, Thenjippalam police contacted the relatives who informed that they cannot afford to travel to Kerala after which the local police got in touch with Varanasi police.
When the relatives informed that they would claim the body if it was brought to Varanasi, ambulance drivers Abdul Sattar, Nazar, Abdul Pathirangal and Abdul Rehman approached the police with the intention of taking the body to Varanasi.
The four drivers, along with the neighbor of the deceased, started the journey by noon on September 28 and reached Varanasi, covering a distance of 2,750 km, by noon on October 2, and handed over the body to Varanasi police.
