Malappuram: The much-awaited open gymnasiums are finally set to become a reality for the people of Malappuram.
In a bid to prevent lifestyle diseases and encourage physical exercise, the health department in association with the local bodies are promoting the open gymnasiums.
The Nirmiti Kendra authorities, who are in charge of building the gymnasiums, have said that these will start operating from mid-February. The first open gyms are coming up in the Varshavahini garden at the Collectorate and four other locations adjacent to the health centres in Kottakkal, Chaliyar, Cheekode and Athanikkal. At Kottakal, a tennis court is also being set up with assistance from the municipality. The gym equipment have already been installed here.
These gym equipment are suitable for all climate. In all other locations except Athanikkal, the foundation work for constructing the gym is yet to start. The authorities say that the work will begin this week itself. The gym at Athanikkal was initially planned at Kuzhimanna. The open gymnasium in Varshavahini is coming up at a cost of Rs 6 lakh.
Timing
The open gymnasiums will be open to the public from 6am to 8am and from 5 onwards in the evenings. People of all age-groups can avail the facility.
Equipment
Air walker, leg shaper, single skier, waist shaper, back shaper, shoulder shaper, knee chair, cycle, and shoulder wheel are among the 10 most modern equipment that will be installed in the open gyms.
