Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala's capital city has been doing its bit to help those in the flood-hit districts of the state. Over hundred loads of relief materials have been sent from Thiruvananthapuram district to the northern Kerala.
Of these, 49 loads were packed off from the collection centre of the corporation. Essential items are still being brought to the 10-odd collection centres in the state.
The city folks, both young and old, are joining hands to do their bit for the people in the northern districts. Two massive landslides had struck Puthumala in Wayanad district and Kavalappara in Malappuram district, burying people and their homes.
The district administration's collection centre at SMV school in the city packed off 6.5 tonnes of essential items on Wednesday, its fourth day of functioning.
Clothes, eatables, essential medicines, and cleaning articles were packed off to Wayanad.
Collector K Gopalakrishnan thanked all those who came forward to help.
The collector said as more essential items are needed, the collection centres would continue to function. He said that he hoped more help would come their way. The district administration alone has sent off 32.5 tonnes of items. School and college students are eagerly helping in the proceedings as volunteers.
Engineering students join hands
A bus was filled with essential items as students of various engineering colleges in the Kerala capital came together for the cause. The relief materials collected by the National Service Scheme (NSS) cell of the A P J Abdul Kalam Technical University from various colleges were taken to the College of Engineering (CET), Trivandrum. Minister Kadakampally Surendran flagged off the vehicle the other night. The NSS volunteers are with them.
The NSS unit of the College of Engineering collected essential items from ST College at Pappanamcode, Heera College, St Thomas College, Mohandas College, PRS college, Rajdhani College, and Trinity College.
Corporation collection centres to function tomorrow as well
Hundreds of people came with relief materials to both the collection centres of the corporation. Several organisations are also bringing in relief material to the centres. Over 1,500 volunteers are working at the corporation centres. Mayor V K Prashanth is in charge of both the centres, which are open 24 hours.
The goodwill gesture of the capital city is creating waves in the social media world as well. Facebook and WhatsApp are flooded with memes of relief efforts.
