Gang leader given free access to kitchen at Viyyur sub-jail in Thrissur

Thrissur: A notorious gang leader, who was nabbed by the anti-terrorist squad (ATS), is allegedly getting royal treatment at the Viyyur sub-jail in Kerala’s Thrissur district.

Perumbavoor native P K Anas is an accused in several criminal cases, including murder and gold smuggling.

The accused is reportedly given free access to the prison kitchen after 6pm.

Senior officers have received information that Anas and his accomplices are let out of their cells in the night, and allowed to cook and eat their favourite dishes. Beef dishes, which are not on the prison menu, are also reportedly cooked.

Anas, also an accused in cases of kidnapping, illegal possession of firearm, and extorting money, was arrested in May.

The jail department had found that he was getting unlawful aid while he was remanded at the Ernakulam district jail. One temporary staff was then sacked and an assistant prison officer was transferred. After this, Anas was shifted to the Viyyur district prison.

The Crime Branch team had taken Anas into custody from the Viyyur prison.

After his custody period ended, Anas was taken to the Viyyur sub-jail instead of the district prison as part of the COVID-19 preventive measures. The Viyyur sub-jail has a quarantine centre. Though he was supposed to be here only for 14 days, Anas continues to be at the sub-jail for more than a month now.

Skirmish over frisking

A person was summoned to cook at the sub-jail for Independence Day. Anas and gang had stopped a personnel from frisking this chef, leading to a skirmish.

As the scuffle escalated, he was asked to leave. It is suspected to be an attempt to smuggle drugs into the jail through this person.
