For producer-turned-director Sajid Nadiadwala, bagging remake rights of South Indian movies is nothing new. After Salman Khan's Kick, which is the remake of Telugu film by the same name, we had earlier reported about the director was gearing up to remake Magadheera with Shahid Kapoor in the lead.
Now, we hear that the producer of Jigarthanda has sold the remake rights of the Tamil hit film to Sajid Nadiadwala for a never-before-heard price. But then, there is trouble. Karthik Subbaraj, the director of the original, is reportedly upset with producer Kathiresan for selling the rights to Nadiadwala without his consent.
Karthik had written and directed the film that went onto to achieve a cult status. However, the director was not part of the discussions over remake rights. It is also reported that being the owner of the script, Karthik holds 40 per cent ownership of the movie.
Earlier, there were hints that Karthik himself would direct the film in Hindi. But with the latest developments, it is almost certain that he is not in the picture.
We will also have to wait a while to see who are reprising the characters Karthik and 'Assault' Sethu in the Hindi remake. In the original, these roles were done to perfection by Siddharth and Bobby Simhaa respectively.
Jigarthanda was a box office hit and it won much critical acclaim too. Bobby Simha, who played the dreaded gangster 'Assault' Sethu in the film, won the National Award for Best Supporting Actor this year.
The musical gangster flick tracks the life of a young aspiring filmmaker who follows a real life gangster in search of a solid story, but instead finds himself in a pickle when the gangster insists to be the hero of the film.
