Lukewarm reception for 'Kaaka Muttai' in Kottayam

Kottayam: National award winning Tamil movie Kaakka Muttai that had been doing its rounds across the globe, collecting accolades and awards, was released in Kerala this Friday.

However, in Kottayam, the movie received lukewarm response from the public after eight people made an appearance for the morning show.

The scheduled noon show was almost called off due to lesser number of people, but the theatre employees gave it a go after one of them counted heads and was assured that there were ten people.

"This is the kind situation we (the theatres) are in today", the employee said, acknowledging that the movie was indeed good, but if it didn’t fetch an audience, they would be forced to call off the shows.

While it’s true that Kaakka Muttai was never as avidly promoted as the other movies that released around the same time in Kerala, it is still disheartening to see filmgoers going by the myth of award winning movies being a drab watch.

On the contrary, Kaakka Muttai is a crisp and dynamic film about two slum kids and their pursuit of an unattainable pizza that runs for a well-edited one hour 45 minutes approximately.

Even though the movie did not cater to the demands of mainstream movies, it went on to become a super hit in Tamil Nadu after it got released there.

Kaakka Muttai is the directorial debut of M. Manikandan, jointly produced by actor Dhanush and director Vetrimaaran, and was premiered in the Toronto International Film festival, 2014. It also won the National Award for Best Children’s film.
