When Thrissur lass Sayana Sunil got 'Ladoo' as Vishu surprise

Arungeorge K David's 'Ladoo' is running successfully in the theaters. The comedy entertainer starring Vinay Forrt, Shabareesh Varma, Balu Varghese, Gayathri Suresh et al narrates the tale of an adventurous register marriage. The movie encompasses all shades of youth like campus life, romance, friendship and family life. With a string of fresh faces before and behind the camera, 'Ladoo' introduces some vibrant young talents who are set to secure special places in Malayalam film industry.

Meet Sayana Sunil, a Thrissur lass who debuted with 'Ladoo.' The 24-year-old fashion designer decided to try her luck in movies when she got eyes on the first-of-its-kind video auditions the movie crew announced earlier this year. Sayana plays the role of a campus queen in this movie. 'Apsara,' as the name suggests, is a fairy on the campus whom everyone fancies. In a casual conversation with Onmanorama, Sayana reveals her journey to the silver-screen and experiences with 'Ladoo.'

How did you join 'Ladoo?'

I was selected to perform this character after clearing several levels of auditions. Team 'Ladoo' announced their casting call in a brief video. They also asked the contestants to send video clips of our performance. It were my friends who forced me to send a video clip to team 'Ladoo.' Fortunately, I got selected for the movie during the Vishu season this year. 'Ladoo' was a Vishu gift for me. I never imagined I would ever get through the audition.

About your character in the movie...

I play a character called Apsara in this movie. Apsara, as the name suggests, is the fairy in a college campus. The campus queen, in other words. SK, the character played by Shabareesh Varma, has a crush on Apsara.

About your family and educational background...

I have my father, mother and a younger brother at home. My family is my biggest support system. My father Sunil literally dreamed of the day when he could finally watch me on the big screen. My mother Yamuna is my biggest critic. She picks up even the minutest of the mistakes I make and makes fun of me. Brother accompanies me to premiere shows and promotional programs of the movie.

I am a fashion designer by profession. Though I did my schooling and higher secondary education at Thrissur, I moved to Bengaluru to get good exposure to fashion industry. I am equally passionate about fashion designing as I am about movies.

How do you feel after acting in your first movie?

'Ladoo' changed my outlook towards movie-making and life on movie-sets. This is the dream of many Thrissur-based movie enthusiasts come true. Right from the director, a lot of people who worked behind this movie are youngsters and fresh faces. Everyone was supporting one another like we were a family or a circle of best friends. I am thankful to Vinay Forrt for bearing with all the silly mistakes I made. I was nervous to do the combination scenes with him. He waited till I built a comfort zone with him. Shabareesh Varma, Balu Varghese and Saju Navodaya were all supportive and friendly on the sets.

Your future plans and ambition

I didn't have to transform myself very much for this movie. Director and the script writer asked me to deliver the dialogues in a candid style. I would like to do characters which require transformation. I want to explore my talents in acting by trying out such challenging characters. I look forward to exploit my skills in acting and fashion designing in the movie industry.
