Nee-na Women characters are yet again stereotyped on the basis of their outfit.

Nee-Na is a woman-centric movie that deals with a man's problem. The plot revolves around a man who ricochets between his wife and admirer. It's not one of those Lal Jose regulars, and the approach is certainly fresh, if not groundbreaking.

The movie opens with the female lead's life in Saint Petersburg and takes her, and the story, into an extended flashback. In the first half, the director seems to be in a hurry to establish his characters and keeps bombarding you with tidbits that 'should' make Neena, essayed by Deepti Sati, an odd bird. Although the intentional “weirdo tag” becomes an overkill, Neena endears herself to the viewers towards the end.

An alcoholic female protagonist in Malayalam cinema may be bold or rather 'empowering', but women characters are yet again stereotyped on the basis of their outfit. Yeah right, can't think of a sari-clad, bindi-wearing woman downing four shots of vodka in a row!

The second half is laden with issues such as alcoholism, and the intricacies of human relationships. The movie might not be an entertainer, but it is sure to make anyone put on their thinking hats. Albeit the fact that the movie deals with an adult theme, there are no intimate scenes or sexist remarks to offend the family audience. Hope the so-called new generation filmmakers are listening!

Nee-na With her pixie cut and torn jeans, debutante Deepti Sati has nailed the tomboy look.

With her pixie cut and torn jeans, debutante Deepti has nailed the tomboy look. But blame it on poor lip-sync, the damsel fails to make a mark, unlike Vijay Babu who oozes charm in every frame as the male lead Vinay Panikkar. Ann Augustine too has done justice to her role as the 30-something mother, Nalini.

The movie, scripted by R. Venugopal, earns brownie points for its songs; thanks to Nikhil J. Menon, who also makes a cameo appearance. Speaking of guest roles, filmmaker Martin Prakkat also makes his acting debut.

The cinematography has been handled by Jomon T. John, who has collaborated with Lal Jose, quite a few times before. And needless to say, the frames are picturesque.

Nee-Na is definitely a one-time watch, if not, a few notches above that.
