Kochi: The view from the hotel lobby - the vastness of the lake and the mesmerizing greenery is beautiful. No wonder Indian music is so charming! When land is so beautiful to behold, how can the music not be sweet ?

These are the words of Maizie Williams who has arrived as the city’s guest. This senior member of the music band Boney M is no stranger to anyone even in these far shores of Kerala.

‘I have two close friends in Mumbai. My friend Devi had introduced me to Indian classical music. I have heard Carnatic music and Hindustani. I have learned of the diversity of music in Indian languages. Colorful, mellifluous songs.. India and its songs – I love it so much’ Williams says.

How do Boney M’s songs survive time and generations?

That is God’s grace. I am proud to be a part of the band from the beginning. Even newborn babies seem to be our fans. Do we need to say anything more about their grandfathers and grandmothers? I have heard new generation kids singing those old songs without getting even a line wrong. It is a wonder. Songs that gently touch your heart… Can’t blame the world for wanting to hear them again and again.

How does the new generation assess music?

The spurt of technology has diminished the beauty of the song. There is nothing heart-touching now. Statements do not make songs. Good songs are those that alleviate the very feeling of singing. Some of what we hear today is mere sound. Good music is not cacophony. Till the year 2000 the world was on the track of good songs. But I am not disappointed, good times will come again for music. You can also join in me in praying for it.

Did Kochi seem like a loud place to you?

I love India. Coming here, I love Kerala too. While absorbing the sights, I barely mind the sounds.

Don’t the albums have an excess of ingredients of vulgarity and sexuality?

Some do cross the limits. If you truly believe in your talents, where is the need to show body?

What song do you sing when you are by yourself?

By the Rivers of Babylon

Your expectations about the Kochi show…

I am totally thrilled. Ma Baker, Daddy Cool, Brown Girl in the Ring, Rasputin… I haven’t had enough of them yet!
