Why apple seeds may be dangerous for you

apple seeds

An apple a day, may keep the doctor away but recent studies have revealed that you may end up in the hospital if apples are eaten without removing seeds. Many people have the habit of eating the whole of apple including the core that contains the seeds. It has been proven that the more you consume the apple seeds, the greater are the chances of having many health problems that may even turn fatal.

When apple seeds are chewed and ingested, they may react with the digestive juices and produce a substance called amygdaline that can, in turn, produce cyanide. The cyanide and sugar contained in the amygdaline may combine together to form hydrogen cyanide that can even cause death.

Cyanide is a poisonous substance which becomes extremely dangerous when combined with oxygen. It is said that the pits of other fruits like figs, cherries, plum, and peaches, too, contain amygdaline. Make sure that the hard shield around the pits of these fruits does not come in contact with digestive juices.

An apple has at least 20 seeds and would easily fill a cup if just 200 grams of these seeds are powdered. This is enough to harm the health and well-being of human body. Studies say that up to 0.06 to 0.24 mg cyanide would reach the human body from just a gram of apple seeds.

Make sure to remove the seeds when apples are given to children and pet animals. There is no harm in swallowing a few apple seeds. However, it may turn dangerous if the quantity of it increases through regular consumption.
