Summer is a time when body gets dehydrated easily and loses essential minerals. When water content in body reduces, it may lead to severe exhaustion and tiredness. Lighter foods that are easier to digest should be eaten during summers.

It is better to avoid high-calorie food that increases body heat. Traditional dishes can be included in regular diet during summer season. Food items that have high water content can replenish your body. Kanji or rice porridge and milk porridge are light and easier to digest as well.

Drink lots of water

Drinking loads of purified and cooled water could keep your body well hydrated. A healthy person should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. The body gets dehydrated as the temperature goes up. So, it could be replenished by drinking more water.

Stay cool

Foods that cool down the body should be eaten during the scorching summers. Fresh vegetables and fruits, rice and wheat could be included in the daily diet. These foods help refresh the body by reducing the body heat. Tubers are nutritious and could be eaten. Curd and buttermilk are extremely refreshing during the summer. Traditional snacks that aren't oily could be had with the evening tea.

Say 'no' to meat

It is better to avoid meat during the summer. Chicken could increase the body heat. Smaller fishes or mutton could be eaten if you want to include non vegetarian dishes in your diet. Eggs too should be eaten in moderation as they increase body heat.

Having spicy and salty food during the summer could harm your health. Instead of eating piping hot food, you could enjoy warm food. It is better to use green chillies or black pepper in the dishes instead of dried chillies.

Avoid junk food

Junk food should be strictly avoided. Oily snacks, pickles, biryani and porotta could be a bit heavy during the summer. Spicy and sour curries too should be avoided.

Soft drinks could be harmful

Instead of drinking soft drinks or aerated drinks, you could consume natural drinks like tender coconut water, fresh butter milk, rice water, salted lemon water and fruit juices. It is better to eat fruits rather than extracting their juice. When the juices are extracted, the natural fibres in it are lost.

Besides, the bioflavonoids, too, get reduced. Even if you are drinking fruit juices, try not to add extra sugar in it. Tender coconut water is refreshing and replenishes the body with minerals. Try to limit the intake of coffee and tea. The caffeine in coffee could produce more urine. So, beverages like coffee and tea could only reduce the water content in the body.

Do not over eat

Lighter food in small portions could keep you healthy during the summers. Do not give extra pressure to the stomach and the intestines by over eating. If not diagnosed with other health problems, it is better to cook food in fresh ghee than using oil.
