Amrutha Kalesh, a native of Payyannur, has always been interested in creating beautiful patterns and designs since childhood. It was this love for designing that made her opt for fashion technology for her higher studies. She even chose to become an instructor of crafts and designing. However, it was quite unexpectedly that she turned to cake designing. Now, she is noted as one of the most talented cake decorators in the state. Amrutha's designer cakes are a hit on many social media platforms as well. Not just the stylish and unique designs, but Amrutha's cakes are known for their great flavour and super soft texture as well.

Amrutha’s cake technology
Amrutha has completed her master’s degree in fashion technology. “It is quite expensive to make a career in fashion. I didn’t have the situation to start a boutique or concentrate on the production of designer apparels. I got married while I was studying for my master’s degree. After having a baby, I couldn’t go out to work. Now, I am working as a crafts teacher at a school in Kasaragod,” says Amrutha.
Amrutha, who currently lives at Ramanthali in Payyannur has been baking and designing cakes for almost a year. It was during the lockdown period that she began experimenting more with designs and flavours in cakes. Most people place the orders after seeing the pictures of her cakes on the various social media platforms. Mouth publicity too has helped her. Amrutha says her background in fashion designing has helped her while trying out unique styles and designs on delicious cakes.
Amrutha had worked as a tutor of the fashion technology diploma course for some time. She became fascinated with cake designing after she saw the pictures of beautiful cakes baked by one of her students. She learned the basics from her student. Amrutha also trained in cake decorating with a friend at Payyannur. “Our creativity is the most significant factor. You could experiment a lot if you have amazing creative faculties. Your finishing touches would improve with constant practice. I was keen to post the pictures of my cakes on the social media. Those pictures got noticed and I began receiving orders. I even run a social media page called the Homely Bakes. The page too got noticed. The nutty bubble is the most popular cake. I have even received repeat orders from those who have tried it once. Once, I travelled all the way from Payyannur to Kasaragod just to deliver this cake. The nutty bubble is my son Aryan’s favourite too,” says Amrutha.
