Easter special beef varattiyathu

Beef dishes are unavoidable for the traditional Easter lunch. Beef varattiyathu, with a bit of spicy gravy and crunchy coconut shards, makes the perfect treat for the celebrations. Check out the fairly simple recipe of beef varattiyathu.

Ingredients
1 kg beef
½ tbsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp chilli powder
1 tbsp coriander powder
1 tbsp pepper powder
½ tbsp garam masala
Salt as required
1 tbsp garlic (crushed)
1 tbsp ginger (crushed)
3 green chillies
3 tbsp coconut oil
100 gms shallots
5 garlic cloves
Small piece of ginger
Palm full of coconut shards
2 bunches curry leaves
1 tomato
For tempering
2 tbsp coconut oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
2 bunches curry leaves
3 shallots
½ tbsp pepper powder
½ tbsp garam masala

Preparation
Wash the beef and cut into small pieces
Cook the beef pieces along with turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder, pepper powder, garam masala, crushed, ginger, garlic and green chillies and salt as required
Add some water as well if required
Heat coconut oil in a pan and sauté ginger, garlic and shallots
Add the coconut shards, turmeric power and curry leaves as well
When these are nicely sautéed add chilli powder, coriander powder, pepper powder and garam masala
Sauté until the raw smell of the powders are gone
Into it add the tomato and sauté for a while
Now add the beef pieces along with the cooking juices
Mix well
Roast for at least 20 minutes
Add pepper powder if you need it spicy
Heat coconut oil in another pan and splutter the mustard seeds
Sauté the shallots and curry leaves
Add the garam masala and pepper powder
Mix well
Pour this tempering into the beef varattiyathu.
