Kannur: The organizers of the 57th Kerala School Kalolsavam that starts at Kannur on Monday, are bracing for a possible liquidity crunch, arising out of demonetization.
But to pre-empt any hiccups, they have taken a raft of measures including installing card swipe machines at various points, and paying judges and even winning contestants through bank transfers.
The event, which will have over 12,000 contestants participating in more than 300 items at 20 venues across the district, has an estimated budget of Rs 2.1 crore.
Though the organizers are struggling with a currency crunch due to demonetization, they are trying to find the best solution to tackle the problems.
"We have received Rs 25 lakh in liquid cash from the government to organize the event, but we might need around Rs 95 lakh for its smooth functioning," said K.V. Mohan Kumar, director of public instruction (DPI).
"We are, right now, able to manage everything. However, it is difficult to predict what will happen in the coming days if we don't have enough liquid cash", added Kumar.
As a step to ease the cash crunch, the organizers have decided to pay the judges through their bank accounts after the event. The prize money for the students will also be deposited in their respective bank accounts. Earlier, the cash prizes were distributed to the students on the stage once the results were announced.
"Students have been asked to bring their Aadhaar cards and their bank account details. The prize money will be deposited accordingly", said Mohan Kumar.
But if students and parents have no liquid cash with them, they don't have to worry. Card swipe machines will be installed at various venues for students. "Contestants filing an appeal will have to pay Rs 5,000 and they can transfer money using swipe machines at this year's state youth festival", added Kumar.
Asia's biggest cultural festival will be inaugurated by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Eminent playback singer K.S. Chitra will be the chief guest.
The week-long gala will come to a close on January 22.
