Vandiperiyar, Idukki: A school headmaster has been suspended after a class-one student was caned by the class teacher. The latter, Sheela Arulrani, was suspended on Thursday itself by the deputy director of Education (DDE), Idukki.

A preliminary inquiry by the education department had found that higher authorities were not informed and there was an attempt to hush up the case, following which the headmaster, Baburaj, has been suspended.

After finding the bruises on the kid's body, the parents of the child had reached the school on Thursday morning itself. However, the complaint alleges that the headmaster tried to reach a compromise by getting the class teacher to apologise.

The education department came to know about the case through the media after the child was admitted to hospital and the police and the Childline landed at the hospital to take the statement.

The district child protection officer submitted a report to Idukki district child welfare committee chairman P G Gopalakrishnan on the issue.

Based on the statement of the student, teacher Sheela was charged under unbailable sections amid reports that she has fled to Tamil Nadu to avoid arrest.

Several association held protests in front of the government LP school on Thursday.

The child was beaten for not completing classwork.
