Ambalapuzha: Police, who were on the lookout for a missing man here, have arrested his wife for financial fraud. Meena (24), wife of Amabalpuzha Komana Cheruvallikad Alex, was arrested by CI Biju V Nair and SI M Pratheesh Kumar on Thursday night.

Alex has been missing since June 27. On June 28 evening, Alex's bike, mobile phone and wallet were found abandoned near the north side of the Thottappally spillway bridge. On a complaint filed by relatives, the police were investigating the disappearance of Alex.

The police kept tabs on the mobile phones of Alex and Meena with the help of the police cybercell. Meanwhile, a relative, Pushpa Shaji, approached the police alleging financial fraud by Meena.

According to the complaint, Meena took Rs 92,000 from Pushpa and Rs 75,000 from another person promising them education loans. Pushpa was promised a loan of Rs 15 lakh from a bank.

Meena had also taken Rs 4 lakh from the staff of a private bank at Haripad promising fixed deposits. The police said that she is yet to return Rs 1.25 lakh to the bank employees.

Until two years ago, Alex was working abroad. The police have got information that before Alex went missing, he had an argument with his wife over money matters. Meena was supposed to return the remaining amount to the bank staff a day after Alex went missing, the police said.

The full details the fraud was revealed during the questioning of Meena in custody. The police are inquiring if she is involved in more such cases. The woman was presented in court and remanded.
