Abhimanyu killer feigned affinity for SFI in bid to cosy up to target
Abhimanyu was killed on the campus of Maharaja's College.

Kochi: The police team investigating the murder of Students Federation of India (SFI) leader M Abhimanyu at the Maharaja's College here have received information that prime suspect Muhammad had feigned affinity for the SFI as he tried to befriend the victim several months ago.

Muhammad, a Campus Front activist, had congratulated the Left and Democratic Front when it won the Chengannur by-election in late May. Another post, which appeared on April 27, read: "I'm not reluctant to stand up proudly if what I'm holding is a red flag, because I'm a comrade."

Interestingly, the SFI activists at the college campus shared his post.

The police cyber cell is probing whether the prime suspect in the killer gang is the same Muhammad, who was a third-year Arabic degree student at the autonomous college. If it is proven that the Muhammad who had campaigned for the SFI on the campus is the killer himself, the probe takes an interesting turn.

Frontline Campus Front activists, who are never inclined towards the Leftists, hardly ever participate in SFI campaigns. Classmates say Abhimanyu and Muhammad were never seen together on the campus.

The police have information that Muhammad had talked to Abhimanyu several times on the phone on July 1, the day of the murder, when the SFI leader was busy attending a DYFI program in his village, Vattavada in Idukki district. However, indications are that the calls were not made from Muhammad's number.

The claim made by Abhimanyu's family that someone kept on calling him that day was a crucial piece of information for the probe team.
