Most of the rivers, lakes in the state are in spate.

Thodupuzha: Monsoon wreaked havoc in the state claiming lives, disrupting traffic and damaging natural assets and property. A toddler in Malappuram, Muhammed Shammil, was killed after he fell into a canal near his house in Karinkallathani, Malappuram, Wednesday. A teenager, Majesh, was reported missing after he tried to rescue his friend who fell in Kalladayar in Kollam.

On Wednesday, a landslide occurred near Elappally Edad in the Moolamattom-Vagamon route even as heavy rain continues in Idukki district. No casualty has been reported in this incident. Landslides have been reported in several other places in the district. Roads have been inundated in Vandiperiyar, blocking vehicular movement.

Many of the low-lying areas in the district have been submerged. The water level at Mullaperiyar dam has risen to 123.5 feet.

Schools, colleges to be shut

In the northern part of the state, Malappuram district is also experiencing heavy downpour. Traffic has been blocked on the Mannarcad-Attapadi ghat road after a landslide at Patham Valavu. Efforts are on to remove mud and clear traffic.

All educational institutions, excluding professional colleges, in Malappuram have been given a holiday on July 12 (Thursday). However, there will be no change in exams scheduled for Thursday.

Educational institutions, except professional colleges and model residential schools, in Wayanad will remain shut on Thursday. CBSE and ICSE schools and anganwadis will also have holiday.

In Idukki, holiday has been declared on Thursday for all institutions, including professional colleges.

In Palakkad, schools and anganwadis will remain closed on Thursday, but colleges would function. Kozhikode collector U V Jose announced holiday for all educational institutions except professional colleges.

Traffic will be regulated on Wayanad pass from Thursday morning considering possible landslips. Movement of heavyweight passenger vehicles, including Scania and tourist buses, has been banned until a new order is issued. Buses with route permits are exempted from the ban.

All educational institutions from Anganwadis to higher secondary schools will remain shut in Ernakulam district, but colleges and professional colleges will function, the district collector informed.

A holiday has been declared for educational institutions, excluding professional colleges, in certain areas of Kottayam - Kottayam municipality, Aymanam, Arpookara, Thiruvarppu and Kumarakom.

Alappuzha collector has announced holiday for institutions, except professional colleges, in Cherthala taluk on Thursday.

Loss of crops has been reported also from Ayiloor in Nelliyampathy, Palakkad district.

Heavy downpour continued for the third consecutive day in Kottayam on Wednesday. Landslide occurred at Chonamala in Thalanad panchayat, Erattupetta, on Tuesday night. The Chonamala-Illikkal road has been ruined.

Eight families have been evacuated from Kottamala, Pala, fearing landslide. Rivers including Meenachil and Manimala are in spate.

A tree has been uprooted at Arupara on the Kottayam-Kumarakom route.
