Several schools, colleges to remain shut in southern districts

Thiruvananthapuram: Educational institutions in Alappuzha district and certain taluks and panchayats in southern districts of Kerala will remain shut on Friday as heavy rain continued to lash these areas.

The Alappuzha district collector has declared holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges.

It will be holiday for schools and colleges in Thiruvalla taluk of Pathanamthitta district. Earlier, it was declared that Friday will be a working day for educational institutions in Thiruvalla. Since the rain showed no sign of flagging, it has been decided to keep shut all educational institutions, except professional colleges. The holiday has also been extended to Saturday in Thiruvalla taluk, though professional colleges will be open. All educational institutes across Pathanamthitta district where relief camps have been opened will also remain shut.

In Kottayam district, all schools and colleges in Kottayam and Vaikom taluks, Changanassery municipality, Vazhappally, Kurichy, Thrikkodithanam, Payippad, Madappally and Kidangoor panchayats will remain closed. All schools where relief camps function will also remain shut. The Palakkad district collector has, meanwhile, announced a holiday for educational institutions in Nelliyampathy panchayat in view of severe fog in the area.

The Mahatma Gandhi University has postponed all examinations scheduled for Friday. New dates will be announced later.

VC seeks report

Meanwhile, the MG University's decision to conduct exams on July 16 when heavy rain was pounding the state as trigged a row. Students had to literally wade their way to the exam halls, only to find that the exam had been postponed. Many colleges had even opened the question paper. Rest of the universities in the state had announced the decision to postpone the exams the day before and alerted the students. MG University vice-chancellor DR Babu Sebastian has asked the exam controller to submit a report.
