Perumbavoor: A Bengali worker has been arrested over the murder of young woman at Idathikad at Vazhakulam, near Perumbavoor, on Monday morning.

Vazhakulam MES College student Nimisha's throat was slit as she reportedly resisted a bid by the accused, Bija, to steal her grandmother's gold chain, the police said. Nimisha was at home on Monday as it was a holiday for her batch on account of ongoing examinations.

Nimisha died before doctors could attend on her. The crime was committed around 10.45 am.

A final-year BBA student, Nimisha is the daughter of Thamby and Salomi of Anthinadu House in Kizhakkambalam panchayat. Her sister Anna is a class-9 student. Nimisha's father, an autorickshaw driver, was injured in the attack as the suspect intruded into the house. His brother Alias was also injured in the scuffle.

The accused, a native of Murshidabad in West Bengal and the victim's neighbour, was hiding in a nearby shed from where local people picked him up and handed over to the police.

Latest reports say angry locals rushed to labour colonies inhabited by migrants and threatened them. Fearing protest from locals, around 70 migrant labourers approached the Edathala police station seeking protection.
