Heavy rain in Alappuzha: Rail traffic hit
Several trains are running late along Alappuzha route.

Alappuzha: Heavy rain continued to lash Alappuzha on Wednesday, flooding low-lying areas and affecting rail traffic.

An uprooted tree fell on a railway track at Karuvatta in Alappuzha. Though the tree was cleared from the track, several trains, including Nagercoil-Mangalore Maveli Express, Bangalore-Kochuveli Express and Guruvayur-Thiruvananthapuram Intercity Express, are running late. Alappuzha and several other districts have been receiving heavy rain since Tuesday.

All educational institutions, including professional colleges, in Kuttanad taluk, Alappuzha, were given holiday on Wednesday. Schools in other taluks that are functioning as relief camps were also shut .

Sea erosion was reported in the coastal belts of Alappuzha, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram and a number of people have been shifted to relief camps.

At present, 7,348 people are in 44 relief camps across the state.

In Alappuzha district, 12 new relief camps were opened since Monday evening and 3,886 people living in the coastal areas, including Porakkad, have been shifted there.

The Met Centre has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in some places in the state till August 2. Thunderstorms, accompanied by gusty winds, were likely to affect Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts.
