Pathanamthitta: The deluge in Kerala has left an octogenarian here waiting to be rescued with his wife's body in Pathanamthitta. KK Kovil, formerly with the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), is stranded in his two-storey house, near Arattupuzha junction.

The first floor of the house is submerged and the elderly woman, reportedly in her 80s, died in the wee hours of Wednesday while the couple was trying to relocate themselves to the top floor of the house to escape inundation.

The couple had no means to reach the outside world and the tragedy was noticed only when neighbours came to check on them later in the day. Dr Ajith, the only son of the couple, had been unable to reach his parents and the elderly man waited desperately for help to come in so that he could evacuate the building.

Kovil's wife, Ammini Amma, was a former professor with the Banaras Hindu University.

The elderly couple had been staying at the house on the Kozhanchery-Chengannur highway ever since their retirement.
