Kozhikode: The Government TTI Model UP School in Kozhikode has offered to 'adopt' a school that suffered extensive damage in Ernakulam district in the August floods. The decision came after teachers from the Kozhikode school visited Chalakka LP School, near Kuthiyathode, in North Paravur for restoration work as part of the Kerala School Teachers Association (KSTA)'s efforts.
Chalakka school has 105 students, 80% from the backward classes. The whole area was inundated as Periyar and Chalakkudy rivers breached banks. The waters destroyed benches, desks, almirahs and even service books of teachers at the school.
The school was reopened on Wednesday, but many of the students did not turn up. Many are still at relief camps, since their houses are filled with silt brought in by the waters. A Parent-Teachers Association meeting of the TTI school was called and a decision was taken to adopt the Chalakka school. They approached deputy director of education EK Suresh Kumar for permission.
Teachers and parents contributed a good amount of money to support the adoption plan. Several institutions and individuals joined in with support in kind.
Books and equipment for studies will be readied for the school soon. Medical camps will be conducted in the area and students and local people will be given counselling. Magic shows, music programmes and other entertainment are planned for students twice a month.
