Burglars decamp with valuables after assaulting couple in Kannur

Kannur: A four-member armed gang robbed a couple after assaulting them in Kannur town in the wee hours of Thursday. The burglars, who wore masks, made away with 30 sovereigns gold, Rs 15,000 in cash, cell phones, laptop and other valuable household items.

The daring burglary took place at the house of 'Mathrubhumi' Kannur unit news editor Vinod Chandran, 53, and his wife Sarita, 50. Both were tied up as the gang, which broke into their house around 2 am, stayed on for two hours and ransacked the house. The gangsters even forced the couple to provide them with the PIN number of their ATM card.

The gang members apparently spoke Hindi and had arrived in a vehicle. The police said the burglars likely belonged to another state. The gang broke open the door of Chandran's rented house near Kannur south railway gate, near Thazhe Chowwa.

The incident came to light when Chandran called up his colleagues after the gang left. The police later shifted the injured couple to the AKG Co-operative Hospital.

Kannur DySP P Sadanandan and circle inspector Sadanandan Kannipoyil will probe the case.
