Keralite joins Irish police ranks

Kottayam: Keralites are making their mark in faraway Ireland after achieving significant success in their popular fiefdoms like Germany over more than half a century. Latest in the list is Robin Jose, who has joined the Irish police force. His batch passed out with a colourful parade after training at the Garda Síochána College at Tipperary.

Jose's family belongs to Ithithanam, Changanassery, in Kottyam district.

Robin’s achievement is remarkable as few Asians apply to join the Irish police force Garda Síochána, popularly known as the Gardaí (guards).

During the passing out parade, 185 new recruits received instructions and advice from Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, who took the salute. He urged the new police officers not to misuse their official position and serve the people wholeheartedly.

Robin is the son of Jose Pothan and Lailamma Jose of Manathuruthil House. He now lives at Wilton in Cork along with wife Ance and children Liana, Alex and Treesa.

After his education at Kristu Jyoti School and SB College, Changanassery, Robin secured an MBA from the Madras University.

Various Malayali associations in Ireland congratulated Robin on his achievement. It is for the first time that a Keralite is joining the Irish Garda, said an association office-bearer.

Indians are occupying top posts in various sectors in Ireland and a Keralite’s appointment in the police force is a milestone, he said.
