Malappuram: A bullet tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to the Chelary plant of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) overturned at Panambra in the pre-dawn hours leading to a massive leakage.

An alert was sounded in a 500-metre radius around the spot where the accident took place. Many residents were evacuated swiftly.

Several teams of the Fire Force are at the accident spot. An expert team from the IOC plant nearby has also reached the spot.

Efforts are on to stem the seepage of LPG by pumping water into the tanker. Empty tankers have been transported to the spot to transfer the highly inflammable fuel into them.

Households in the vicinity have been alerted by the police and revenue executives, who made loud speaker announcements.

They also directed residents to avoid lighting any source of fire. Power supply has been disconnected in the nearby areas.

Authorities said it would take hours for the leakage to be plugged.

Traffic along the route has been diverted.

Large vehicles bound for Thrissur are being diverted from Ramanattukara junction and smaller vehicles are being rerouted from Kakkancheri junction.
