Neyyattinkara: Students who are part of the ‘Nalla Paadam’ Club of Sai Krishna Public School, Chengal, are all set to earn the honour of handing over rice to the 'rice-bowl' of Kerala.

A team from the school had earlier taken part in the cleaning drive at Pandanad in the worst-affected areas of Kuttanad. As a parting gift, the students offered to return with their harvest from a full five acres.

“The harvest at the paddy field belonging to the school will take place after we return. After the threshing and milling, the rice will be delivered to out brethren here,” the children promised.

The school students are now on a mission to keep the word. The ‘Harvest festival-2018’ of the school was held on Tuesday and was inaugurated by Parassala block panchayat president V R Saluja by cutting a bunch of paddy in the presence of school managing director S Rajasekharan Nair and others.

During the previous years, rice from the paddy harvested by the school was given away to prepare rice gruel for poor patients in hospitals.

The Nalla Paadam Club in Sai Krishna Public School had launched paddy cultivation to encourage farmers to grow rice in the backdrop of widespread conversion of paddy fields for growing other crops. The management purchased five acres of fallow land near the school for cultivating paddy. Student members of the Nalla Paadam Club took up the challenge and reaped a bumper harvest each year. They participated in all activities on the field along with the farm workers. The students are also the mascots of organic farming.

The youngsters are fully supported from school academic director R K Radhakrishnan, principal T Renuka, Nalla Paadam coordinators Sindhu and Sheeja and teachers Ashadevi and Sreelatha.
