Govt to come down heavily on eve-teasers on trains

New Delhi: Those harassing women during train journeys will not get away with it easily anymore. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has recommended to the government that those who trouble women on trains should be get jail terms stretching up to three years.

The recommendation toughens the provision in the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for such offences. A jail sentence of up to one year is the current punishment for offences like derogatory comments on women.

The RPF has recommended an increase in fine from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for men who travel in ladies' compartments. Another proposal is to provide protection to women who detain offending men until police help arrives.

The proposals are prompted by an increase in offences against women on trains. Data from recent years show a 35% escalation in crimes against women on Indian trains.
