IMD warns of heavy rain in Kerala; yellow alert till September 30

Kochi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain in several districts of Kerala till September 30. Meanwhile, the Central Water Commission has informed that flooding may occur in the rivers of the state.

An alert has been issued in this regard in Idukki, Wayanad, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Palakkad and Malappuram districts. Rain between 64.4 mm and 124.4 mm has been forecast in these areas.

A yellow alert has been issued in Idukki and Wayanad districts on September 26.

The alert will be in force in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad and Wayanad on September 27.

Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Palakkad and Wayanad districts will have the alert on September 28.

On September 29, the alert will cover Palakkad, Malappuram and Idukki. The warning applies to Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts on September 30.

A heavy rainfall warning has been issued in Idukki district on September 27. Earth collapse and flooding are also likely.

The government has ordered all officials concerned to be present in these areas to carry out disaster management activities. Directives have also been issued to open round the clock control rooms at all taluks in the hilly areas. Buildings which can serve as relief camps have to be arranged and necessary facilities set up. People have been advised not to travel to the hilly areas as landslips may occur.

In August, torrential rain, overflowing rivers and a series of landslides had caused the death of around 400 people and cut off vast swathes of land in Kerala.
