Venomous snake sneaks into train, killed after inter-state ride

Mangaluru: A krait travelled on the Maveli Express all the way from Kochuveli to Chennai via Mangaluru. The ticketless journey was in an air-conditioned coach.

The snake, locally known as valakoyyuppan‍, remained in the train as it reached Chennai where railway employees who spotted it promptly finished it off.

The venomous snake, also known as sanguvarayan or vellikettan in Malayalam, had apparently boarded the train on September 25. Perched on top of the door, the snake had fallen on to the AC attender's body. As an attempt was made to kill it, the snake crept through the gap where coaches are linked. It could not be found on the track and the railway staff assumed it would have vanished into the bushes.

The train reached Mangaluru on 26th morning and departed for Chennai as Mangaluru-Chennai Mail in the afternoon. The train reached Chennai the next morning and as the cleaning staff were doing their job, the snake was found again. It was hiding in a crack of the door and was promptly killed.

Maveli Express, which runs between Mangalore Central and Trivandrum Central, discontinues its journey at Kochuveli these days as the track from there to Thiruvananthapuram is under repair. It is assumed that the snake might have entered from this area which is covered in bush.
