Murderers, smugglers among 36 to enjoy remission for Gandhi Jayanti

Thiruvananthapuram: Thirty-six prisoners, including convicts in murder cases, will benefit from lesser terms after availing the special remission coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation. The state cabinet has recommended their names to the Governor. An order to this effect is expected later in the day.

Among those whose release is imminent are convicts in murder cases, men who attempted to murder their wives, and those punished for smuggling of spirit.

The jail advisory panel had recommended 126 names for release on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi which falls on October 2. The government has accepted 36, prisoners who will get a concession of one month to one-and-a half years.

The Union Home Ministry had recommended to states that prisoners noted for good behaviour should be given a cut in their terms in three stages and be released.
