Thampy Kannanthanam's funeral to be held today

Thampy Kannanthanam had directed 16 films and produced five films.

Kochi: The funeral of noted Malayalam film director and script-writer Thampy Kannanthanam, who died Tuesday, will be held at Kanjirappally today.

Thampy had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kochi for liver- and kidney-related diseases since September 22. His condition worsened this week and he was put on ventilator support. He died of a heart attack Tuesday afternoon.

The 64-year-old is best known for the cult film 'Rajavinte Makan' (1986) that catapulted actor Mohanlal to the league of top heroes. With this film minting money at the box office, Thampy stamped his authority as a director in the Malayalam film industry and went on to make hit films. His other notable directorial ventures are 'Vazhiyorakkazhchakal', 'Bhoomiyile Rajakkanmar', 'Indrajalam', 'Nadodi', 'Chukkan' and 'Maanthrikam'.

In all, Thampy had directed 15 films and written scripts for three movies – 'Aa Neram Alpa Dooram', 'Janmantharam' and 'Freedom'. He had also produced five movies.

Thampy, born in Kanjirappally in Kottayam district in 1953, studied at MD Seminary school in Kotayam and St Dominic's College, Kanjirapally. He had also acted in two films – 'Attimari' (1981) and 'Oliver Twist' (2007). He started his film career by assisting directors Sasikumar and Joshy.

Thampy’s first directorial venture was 'Thavalam', which had hit the silver screen in 1983. His last directorial venture was 'Freedom', released in 2004.

He is survived by wife and two daughters. His mortal remains was kept at Fine Arts Hall in Ernakulam for public to pay homage Wednesday.
