Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala cabinet's decision to release select prisoners in the state ahead of full term has hit a roadblock, as the Raj Bhavan is yet to examine the file submitted by the ministry.
The governor is yet to get details from the Pinarayi Vijayan ministry regarding the crime(s) committed by the 36 prisoners or any supplementary documents, according to sources.
“The governor (P Sathasivam) will ask the government to provide more documents. He will take a final decision based on legal advice,” a source said, adding that some of the names on the list are unlikely to get the privilege of an early let-off.
The 36 names were short-listed from an initial choice of 126 prisoners to be freed on this Gandhi Jayanti Day (October 2).
The charges against them include murder, attempt to murder and interstate smuggling of liquor.
Among those whose release is imminent are convicts in murder cases, men who attempted to murder their wives, and those punished for smuggling of spirit.
