Fraudsters cook up a solar story and townsfolk eat out of their hands

Chathannur: Several people near Chathannur have said that they had been duped by two strangers who convinced them to buy a wonder cooker. The duo had apparently sold an instrument that looked like an induction cooker to unsuspecting people at Parippalli, Pulikkuzhi and Puthiyapalam who thought they were investing in a solar cooker that lasted for 30 hours.

The complainants had shelled out Rs 10,000 for the cooker even though the salesmen could not offer them a demonstration. They just bought the claim that the cooker could provide heat for 30 hours once it was charged under the sun for an hour.

The fraudulent salesmen were well-dressed and they went about in a car, their victims said. They did not even leave behind a phone number. They mainly targeted well-to-do families.

They pitched that the cookers were easy to use as the sensors prevented boiling over or pans getting burned. They said the price was lower at Rs 10,000 because of a subsidy of Rs 7,500. They collected the money and fled after promising to return the next day with documents of subsidy. They said that they could not demonstrate the cooker because it was not sunny enough.

Some of the people who lost money have registered a complaint with the police.
