Kottayam: The monsoon is yet to thin in Kerala that had seen its worst floods in a century when non-stop downpours deluged the state for more than a week from August 15. Last month, ahead of the northeast monsoons, the state recorded 30.47 cm rains. Countrywide, Kerala tops, along with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, for the amount of rainfall.

While southern state got 4 per cent surplus rain in October, the archipelago received 1 per cent excess than normal. When a chunk of Indian states got less than half the normal October rains, Kerala led the list last month.

District-wise, across the nation, Pathanamthitta topped in the list: it got 62 cm October rains vis-à-vis the usual 36 cm. Ernakulam (40 cm) came second and Kottayam (38 cm) third.

During the four monsoon months starting from June, Kerala received 252 cm rain till September 30 this year. Idukki (382 cm) figured second on the national chart on district-wise breakup on rains during the period (while Udupi topped).

In October, though, Idukki got only 33 cm rain, which was 5 per cent below the projected figure.
