Man on bail held for cheating jail inmate

Nadapuram: A man was arrested for swindling a fellow prisoner after availing bank loans worth Rs 2.42 lakh in latter's name after pledging spurious gold ornaments. Thodupuzha-resident E V Binumon, 40, who was out on bail, was taken into custody on charges of cheating jail inmate Ashsaq. Binumon had promised the latter to arrange funds for Ashsaq's bail bond.

Binumon had met Ashsaq at the Thodupuzha jail when the former was in judicial custody in connection with the pledging of counterfeit jewellery. When both were produced before the Thodupuzha court, Ashsaq, who is from Perambra in Kozhikode district, introduced his mother Aysha to Binumon, and told her that Binumon would help in finding money for his bail bond.

Binumon, who got bail on that day, availed loans through Aysha from various banks by making her pledge spurious gold ornaments, and later absconded. A police team, led by SI N Prajeesh, arrested him when he returned here in his bid to pledge more spurious gold on the pretext that more money was needed for Ashsaq’s bail bond.

Police are probing whether Aysha was aware that loans were availed against fake gold. She will also be booked if the banks lodged a complaint against her. Police are also trying to trace a Kothamangalam-native who made the fake gold jewellery.

The police team included SCPO K Majeed, CPOs V Sadanandan, K Manoj and Jayakrishnan. Further probe into the fraud is on.
